Women in Georgia’s ethnic-minority populated regions rarely participate in public processes and often do not have self-realization opportunities. With support from the USAID Civil Society Engagement Program, the NGO Towards New Possibilities is working to empower women from ethnic minority villages in Akhalkalaki and offer them a safe space to socialize, gain knowledge, and plan joint activities.
Within the program, 25 women attended regular lessons in Georgian language and computer skills and participated in trainings and discussions on media literacy, active citizenship, and advocacy campaigns. With their newly acquired skills, they organized information meetings in their villages for other women to discuss and identify the most pressing issues in their communities. In July, they met with the mayor and head of the sakrebulo (municipal council) in Akhalkalaki municipality and brought local issues to their attention.
